Kashmir a triumph for some and a loss for some, so what’s actually happening in Kashmir?
Well to start with the negatives, there’s been power tussle between the outgoing chief secretary with the LG, the economy has suffered due to partial functioning of different sectors of economy, developmental works have seen a slow start, arrests have been affecting the popular sentiments, Censorship has raised questions on FoE and last but not the least Rumour mongering has created fear psychosis. So, all seems to have gone wrong, but, NO, there’s much more to it as we explain.
Let’s simply understand this like a family structure: Differences can grow within a small family of 5 members, same way communication gap may happen in a family of over 1 Crore people and it’s so many stakeholders who are all trying to do good to Kashmir Valley as per their own understandings.
The primary challenge which Kashmir was facing the idea of separatism supported by Pak proxies, it’s sympathisers as well as a whole bunch of people radicalised in the name of religion; When article 370 was abrogated, it was not to deprive the state of its special status, but only for a greater good of directly being able to weed out the negative elements supported by the nexus of some soft separatist elites (Names avoided for confidentiality).
One might argue, “well what have you done, they’re still roaming free”, yes you are right but what you are not able to see is their backbone is broken, their consecrated supremacy has been challenged and they’ve turn to hiding, waiting for their masters to regain power. You might again asked, why aren’t they arrested: What you don’t know is, yes many have been arrested, many are under scrutiny and many have silently surrendered; Since we are a country which firmly believes in rule of law, so unlike others all our agencies believe in working under the procedures established by law rather than taking haphazard decisions which again may prove counterproductive.
Second assertion, Why censor Journalists! Before even asking such a question we must understand India’s strength has been the fourth pillar of democracy and we would never ever censor a genuine voice; having said that, we need to understand the public sentiments of J&K, its a population which has recently the abrogation of 7 decade old temporary article and any careless move under the guise of journalism could mean death to an innocent person under the influence of confusion, and this is what all the agencies are working hard to avoid, because no mother wants to see the death of his child and that’s what has been focus since the abrogation i.e. to avoid the avoidable casualties and protect the people. Over the past months it was repeatedly observed that many amateur journalists and few experienced one under the pretext of FoE were posting many provocative news items, write-ups, photographs which our adversary across the border was repeatedly misusing to radialize the Youth of Kashmir and hinder the peace process. Thus under such sensitive situation it is extremely important to control what is feeded in the information systems to avoid loss of life.
Third assertion, question on developmental work, It is without a doubt to say that Govt is trying hard to push the developmental projects at a faster pace across J&K and many projects have already been initiated as well, so it is futile to say development is not happening. But one might argue, the start is slow, and the answer is Yes, because of two major reasons, first, No one wants to throwaway his/her hard earned money, terror activity has slowed down but the guerilla terror acts continue by the very limited number foreign & local terrorists, and it is one of the reasons people tend to show reluctance in investing in Valley, but at the same time there are many have shown the courage and deserve a big applause & thumbs for standing up for people of J&K; Meanwhile, security agencies continue their 24X7 efforts to bring terrorism to a full stop. Second, the direct impact of COVID-19: it is not hidden how the world economy has suffered due to the Pandemic and at the same time it has strongly limited the movement of human resource at large and this has proven disastrous for J&K. The projects which would’ve been finished by now have barely started due to the unavailability of appropriate man power, financial risks and several factors associated with COVID-19, but again since a large part of our population is being vaccinated and the Govt has announced a planned Unclock things are expected to take a lead again.
Fourth assertion, the popular sentiments have not changed: The first important thing is people are now fed up of the Azadi idea which is a first major victory in itself, and second people of Kashmir and the negative elements have realised that terrorism is a futile exercise and that’s why their activities have reduced to a large extent, infact it is worth mentioning here that the recruitment campaigns by terrorist have seen a tremendous decline in the past two years and will hopefully come to an end in near future. So, the assertion is baseless and repition of such assertions is not in interest of Nation and Public order. We are fighting on another front i.e. the social media and rumour industry. To answer this we need to understand the strenght of rumours under the present circumstances! our enemies have repeatedly aired rumours through thier Kashmir focussed social media campaigns and their proxies whereby they’re trying hard to instill an unknown fear pshychosis in the minds of people of something bad about to happen be it riots, demographic change, loss of jobs, domicile issuance and what not….. In the vast domain of social media and under the lockdown of COVID-19 what a child is reading on his phone behind the closed doors remains a mystery and threat at the same time. It is absolutely not that anyone wants an internet clampdown in Valley but Govt rather wants the people including the students to be able to use internet for their personal development and education, but unfortunately our enemies have polluted the information system to such an extent that daily thousands of such reports are received by the security agencies; and amidst so many national & international laws pertaining to its use the only necessary evil available at that point in time was a clampdow. It is only after high level security meetings many confidential measures were taken and internet was fully restored. So, the popular sentiment has changed, the separatist narratives have come under control and the process of reformation is very well taking place in Kashmir.
Fifth Assertion: Terror funding has not stopped: I would call it a childish statement of some people because they are not aware of what all happened on ground in the past 30 years in Kashmir. Terror funding is not a simple case of someone transferring money from one bank account to the other, it is rather a much more complicate game and an international business. To give you a brief idea, Terror funding in Valley started a physical movement of money in early 90’s to offshore transfers to Hawala transfers to even starting a parallel economy in Kashmir to run terror networks from its dividends. Until we reached 2020 the structures had become so deep rooted that many of mainstream people were very much part of it and state govt was finding to impossible to end it or even find its roots. What changed after the abrogation was their freedom to carry out unplanned transactions. Accounts which has seen annual transfers of 50 Crores came down to 15-20 Crores, Cash transaction which were unaccounted completely came to halt, the sleeper cells suddenly stopped appearing openly, and many other things happened which are confidential to be discussed here. What happened was that their network’s were choked, and they are slowly suffocating to death. You must remember Many culprits who are just there to benefit from the conflict business who gradually cease to exist under this suffocation and the good news many already have, so be hopeful.
Sixth assertion: Terror attacks continue: This assertion is a part of misinformation that has sadly penetrated the information system; Here are some facts to put you in perspective, The infiltration from our huge 15,107 Km border has reduced by 99% which is a big achievement. The arms infiltration has stopped. The narco terror activities and its agents are caught every single day across J&K. Day in and Day out the hideouts of terrorists are found and destroyed by our security forces; many more fruitful things are happening behind the curtains. So whoever tells you Terror activities have not declined show them these facts and they’ll understand.
Kashmir is going through it’s major reformation phase, the changes we want or expect would not happen suddenly. things take time and that time for Kashmir is not less than 2 more decades or one new generation, only then seeds of hatred, extremism and separatism which have been sown in the past would cease to exist. Till then all what is required form the intelligentsia of our country is to avoid irresponsible and careless remarks towards those who are working for the Progress of J&K and keep ushering love and care towards all our fellow citizens.
