Today the Vajra Division remembers Naib Subedar Chunni Lal, Ashoka Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena Medal, India’s highly decorated soldier who displayed exemplary gallantry and courage of exceptional order, while making the supreme sacrifice, in the highest traditions of the Indian Army, fourteen years ago, at the icy and treacherous heights of the mighty Shambhabari Ridge in Kupwara district.
A son of the soil, Naib Subedar Chunni Lal was born in Bhaderwah tehsil in Doda district, and continues to inspire the present generation to respond to the nation’s call for duty including his son who dons the olive green with great pride.
It was a matter of great honour and proud privilege for the ‘Pharkian Brigade’ to host Veer Naari Smt Chinta Devi and her daughter on this solemn occasion. Smt Chinta Devi witnessed a Guard of Honour in respect of her husband, Late Naib Subedar Chunni Lal, Ashoka Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena Medal, at the Pharkian Brigade Memorial and thereafter travelled to the sacred sands – where the brave heart had laid down his life for the nation while engaged in close combat in neutralising infiltrating terrorists.
The ceremonial events were carried out in presence of Smt Chinta Devi and senior officers of the Vajra Division, with complete military decorum befitting the legacy of the fearless warrior.
