The traders of Mendhar town in Poonch district held a strong protest demonstration after excessive rain water entered into their shops. The shopkeepers of Mendhar area and other places took to streets today afternoon and staged a protest against the district administration and other concerned bodies PWD and R&B.The protesting shopkeepers said that despite repeated pleas the concerned authorities failed to lay a drainage system in the area. “Following the heavy rainfall in the area, the rain water had entered most of the shops. In absence of a proper drainage system, the clogged rain water entered in our shops and damaged our merchandise,” a protesting shopkeeper said.
The incessant rains worsened the situation as most of the roads in the town were inundated causing great inconvenience to the common people. The drainage failure as usual led to water logging and inundation of the town. M A Fani Retd Naib Tehasildar, who was also among the protesters, said that the rain water from residential and non-residential areas of town clogged here in the market and entered their shops, “It is happening due to blocked of drainage system,” he said.“Concerned departments like R&B, PHE, PWD and the concerned BDO are blaming each other and not working on laying a proper drainage system in the area.”“The concerned departments don’t even take pains to de-silt the blocked drains,” he added. The protesters blocked vehicular movement in the area for some time, however, later dispersed peacefully after the intervention of concerned Tehsildar that their genuine demands be resolved soon. However, they have threatened to intensify protests if the authorities fail to address their grievances.
