In a statement issued on Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s letterhead of Hurriyat Conference, a representative Abdullah Gilani has asked Pakistan to maintain its original policy on Kashmir.
“The recent unfortunate decision to grant the status of a province to Gilgit- Baltistan, displays a major shift in Pakistan’s consistent policy. It is the duty of Pakistan governance to address genuine grievances and concerns of the local people in Gilgit and Baltistan, but this purpose can be served without altering the status quo. The move will have disastrous consequences. Pakistan will lose its position and high moral ground in the eyes of Kashmiri People”.
Additionally, the statement reads that, “This move is a reflection of India’s August 5, 2019 aggression. India would welcome this opportunity as a blessing in disguise and use it to justify its August 5, 2019 decision of revoking Kashmir’s special status and merging it with Indian Land.
We, therefore, urge the government of Pakistan to revoke its decision to grant status of a province to Gilgit and Baltistan and consider the repercussions it would have on disputed status of Kashmir and resistance of Kashmiris,” the statement reads.
