Kulgam residents protest against scarcity of water
Kulgam;TRKN : The residents of the Poniwah area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district today staged a protest against the failure of the concerned department in ensuring drinking water supply to the area.
Scores of Villagers came out on road to register their protest and ended up blocking the road and accused the concerned department of putting them up to face the hardships despite Eid-ul-Adha.
“We are without water for the last few months but now the same has gone worse; we are forced to walk distance to get the water and despite being EID, we are left with no option but to come out and walk distance to get drinking water,” the protesting villagers said.
They said that there are some nearby areas that have the perfect water supply. “But there are those areas too which do not have the necessary water supply. We are suffering,” they said.
The protesters urged the Kulgam district administration to look into their matter seriously otherwise locals here will be forced to stage series of protests.
Meanwhile,Naib Tehsildar Shabir Ahmad and Tufail Ahmed, Junior Engineer, Jal Shakti Department, assured the protesters that the water supply in the village would be restored to the old lane within 24 hours and before the 30-year-old pipe, the village was sparsely populated. The problem of drinking water in the area will be solved soon after the arrival of the new JJM line in the area.
“The supply takes a hit with increase in temperature and misuse of water by the majority of locals in the surroundings is major cause of shortage of portable water,” he said.TRKN
