This is pure and prime time decimation of nature in the beautiful Pir Panjals with the forest department in district Poonch perhaps not knowing as to what is happening!
-‘Man, do not pride yourself on your superiority to the trees and animals, for they are without sin, while you, with all your greatness, you defile the earth wherever you appear and leave an ignoble trail behind you — and that is true, alas, for almost every one of us! There are departments in UT Jammu and Kashmir to check this all but if the people in the department itself shake hands with the jungle mafia then what can anyone do. Just for a few dollars more the forests in sub division Surankote are being ruined and there is no one to check. It’s a ridiculous idea!’
-‘So the bad show of devastation of forests continues in Surankote and as things are going it seems that this is not going to stop because the forest department is simply not moving on to the locales which we are going to tell about later in the piece. The gifts of nature are not infinite but some doomsday conspirators think that they are and thus are busy hacking down trees in the slopes of Pir Panjals. Previously also we had written about an incident in which some prime time action was taken by the District Forest Officer and his team but probably on this particular one which is happening in Bafliaz-B he has no clue. In any case he cannot because the men of his own department have got themselves involved with the forest mafia. What would be the action now is anyone’s guess but what is happening is a mess made up and thus everything should be stopped forthwith!
It is rather ironic that everyone one on the environment day or any other occasion indulges himself or herself in planting trees. They include everyone from the political leaders, administrators, forest department officials, NGO’s, teachers, students etc. That in fact is great but what is being done for saving the trees and more importantly the environment for which a special day is earmarked and plenty of promises are made to Mother Nature. But when axes and saws are used to cut the trees no one acts as a savior and when nature strikes back, we are wailing and crying for help. But who cares when the trees give money in abundance and many top men have made a fortune on them. The things are getting from bad to worse as trees are being felled and there is no one to look into this serious affair. If someone wants to join the fun he is most welcome to Bufliaz-B to see the forest loot circus especially the top men in Forest Department UT Jammu and Kashmir and particularly the District Forest Officer Poonch and the forest Ranger who has parked himself in Surankote!
Sometimes I beg to differ with others and come to a conclusion that no doubt, humans will do a lot of damage before we ultimately destroy ourselves. But life will continue without humans. New forms of intelligence will emerge long after this human experiment is over. Do we really want that to happen? Everyone is bound to say a big no but for a few who are making the lucre on nature it is the best possible profession and have taken to it rather seriously. Our sources in Bafliaz had plenty of information to give and I jotted the same verbatim and here it is for the eyes of our readers:
The Forests beats that are under the hydraulic pump of the forest scavengers are 267, 268 and 269 where all the damage is being done with gay abandon since no one is there to take a crack at them.
The places where it is happening are Gunnawali, Dodawali, Dhera Gali and Samni Top. The names are weird but the places are beautiful and it is all because of the greenery with a great number of trees that include deodars and pines.
It’s the wood that the timber mafia is after and thus has involved itself in hacking down trees disdainfully.
The trees are cut but the stumps are left behind as souvenirs to be checked out but they too are mutilated by chemicals and some sort of insignia put on them to tell a tale that the trees which were once their part had gone old and hence they had to be felled.
Obviously without the active connivance of the forest officials this cannot happen and in this our sources categorically indicated that the Forest Guards and the Forester is thickly involved.
They are the ones who are backing the timber mafia and do get their share of the cake baked.
Trees are rolled down, cut into logs, loaded in trucks and are carried to various destinations. Some of them are carried to the Forest Depots while the rest to the sellers who make hefty profits on it.
Reports also indicated that the route taken is of DKG (Dehra Ki Gali) and then to Rajouri. In between there is a Police Post where an officer is the in charge and they know what is happening and thus are allegedly partners in crime as per the information available.
And this is how the forests are being saved in district Poonch and we talk a lot about the forest cover in Jammu and Kashmir and saving the jungles. We speak of love when we destroy nature. It just sounds like innocence of cruel arrogance. Clearly the forest officials involved in this massive state ransacking are nothing else but masters of stupidity.
The people are a disturbed lot and they in no way want their habitat to be destroyed. But who cares? Thus they are vociferously appealing to the District Forest Officer to intervene and check out these jungle marauders because at the moment they are having a free run. DFO Poonch Mohan das is a man of action and it is time that he once again takes a plunge and stops this devouring of forests and takes stock of his own men who are providing all the assists just to make more moolah.
Before putting a full stop to this piece I will remind the men involved in this noxious act that all the tough lessons in life are meant for negative ending to positive beginning. Like fall to spring. During such times nature warns us to alter everything in our life including mind. Such transformations are vital and essential. If we don’t change nature is bound to create a force of destruction that would render many in desolation and forlornness. I don’t have to go far, just go over the events that happened in Kishtwar last week! If still the lessons are not learnt then they never will be!
