Still she is being harried as the influential and the powerful want her to withdraw the case of murder of her child!
-‘SDPO Mendhar Z A Jaffri who is handling the investigations has probably come to the final and finer details of the case in hand which looks to be on the verge of closure but the problems are elsewhere?’
-‘We kept telling you that it was the mother (Raukkayia) who had picked up the gauntlet and decided to fight for getting justice for her child but she was under a hell of a lot of pressure from the villagers and the local leaders in form of sarpanches/panches, the influential like some police officials and those known to the men who were or are in power. But the lady did not give up. Though poor, underprivileged and feeble financially she had trust in the law of the country and thus kept stepping on the gas accelerator.’
-‘She kept knocking the doors of Mendhar Police Station despite the fact that back home she and her family were being bullied around to settle the case within the house and go in for a compromise. Why this was happening, I will come to this in the later part of the script but the fact is that she is still being needled and pricked by the same men who still want that she should withdraw the case. But Rukkayia has decided to press on with it till a conclusion is reached. After all, a determined mother who lost her only child and if a tigress decides to go for vengeance, no power on earth can stop it. Human history is replete with examples of such kinds. This is just another one!
-‘One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered. And this Rukkayia is in no mood to surrender and why should she? Initially it looked all blank and white for her but after the events of the last fortnight she knows that she is almost there and the case is on the last leg and she also knows that she is being cajoled and pestered to get neutral in this situation. But she knows that if she does that she would have chosen the side of the oppressor. Remember if an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. Rukkayia knows this adage very well!
-‘In the beginning when we started writing about the case Rukkayia was seeing the world from the stars’ point of view, and it looked unbearably lonely. She had no hope as the Police seemed to be dilly-dallying the case and the lady was being made to run circles around the Police Station. But she did not give up though heart to heart she knew that the Police was yet again invoking their famous passage of time theory. Every day to her looked like a Halloween one. Everyone seemed to be wearing masks of deceit all the time. There was no one who genuinely wanted to tell her anything. But she continued to walk around and get to know and see what people looked like under the masks. The day has almost arrived and heart to heart she knows that. She is happy but that happiness is of satisfaction but the dreadful feeling that she wont get her son back still haunts her. But at least she fought for him after his death and that toil will definitely yield results. It has almost by the way!’
-‘Had Shariq been alive he would have grown up by three months by now, his killers did that thinking they were smart enough to drive on but their efforts came to naught in front of the determination of a mother, she was hurt, she was feeling lost, she thought that she had been left in the dark, she could feel that she was being kicked around with verbals and bad intent of some evil minds, she was being pushed around and was at the edge of breaking down and there was no one to help her out till the lady known of destiny smiled on her. Now those who gave her the unkindest cut of all are panicking. They still want her to take the case back and change her true confession. But she has decided to hold fast with only one aim in mind and that is ‘justice for her dead son because she knows that ‘God’s cannot be that cruel though humans can be’!
It was mid afternoon a couple of days back when I saw Rukkayia along with her daughter Aasiya and husband Sadeeq having tea and biscuits at a tea outlet in Mendhar and there were a few people alongside her . The discussion in the local lingo was animated and heated too. I kept watching and hearing the sounds emanating and I could make out that the lady was being pursued, perhaps one final attempt to subdue her verbally but it could be threatening also in the coming days. It is now a known fact in Mendhar that the lady will not relent though she has invited dangers to come knocking at her doors and it is quite possible that the same have already arrived. She still wants the police to get the case solved but as I said earlier that it is on its last lap and could be possible that in a couple of days everything would be splattered apart. But hats off to the lady and her unbridled faith in herself that she kept moving with almost all the odds against her. She had nothing with her except for true grit and guts. In the beginning when I met her she was like an outcast who felt that there is something wrong with herself as none were listening to her but during the last fortnight she grew more confident she adapted to the circumstances, she began to feel that there was something wrong with everyone else. Which mother would like to see her buried son being taken out of the grave to find out as to what happened with him? I think no one would but she saw it happening and her hope and faith grew stronger and now when everything seems to be cleared, I mean the doubts she is a confident woman. The system for sure did not let her down but someone had!
From the very beginning she had doubts about someone. Remember the man who was cutting the branches of the tree near the pond when the frantic search for missing Shariq was on. The man was none other than her own son in law (her eldest daughter’s husband). Remember we told you about the aunt (Chachi) of Shariq, we also told you that Shariq could have been witness to something happening within the house and we also told you about the instincts of a mother. It is a high pedigree possibility that the killers would eventually turn out from within the house as that is where the things are leading to and that probably was the reason as to why the Kacheri system was being advocated for settlement within the house. It still is being but now the entire thing has turned over its head. The Police just have to clear out the suspense part of this tragic drama in which a mother lost her son, one who was a futuristic hope for the family, especially the little sisters of his! But if everything goes well from now onwards Rukkayia will feel satisfied and relieved that she fought for her son who she will not see though she had another glimpse of him when he was taken out of the grave for one last time!
Rukkayia now can get up and tell those cajoling and forcing her to go for in house compromise over her son’s murder that please stop laughing at me. This really is one woman’s inspirational story who took it upon herself to get justice for her son. At times during this journey she must have many times said to herself that what a desperate, pathetic fool I was. Time after time, these people had shown me their true colors. Yet, I still wanted to believe they were sorry for causing me pain, but not now! I want them to be punished for what they did to my son by first killing him and then stuffing him in that wretched pond! There is enough sadness in the world already. We don’t need to add to it. But some people did add it to Rukkayia’s world but a time arrived when she found herself standing in exactly the right position, wielding exactly the right weapon to hit back. She did it vehemently!
